The Prize For the Development and Practical Demonstration of Kimmo Strong Artificial Intelligence

Once again, for a second year in a row, I am again doubling the prize money for developing and practically demonstrating a Kimmo Strong Artificial Intelligence. The prize money thus sits at a whopping 40 euros! That should get some balls rolling. I have yet to receive a single submission so my optimism is slowly dwindling. For those missing their clicking finger here is (once again!) the definition for Kimmo Strong Artificial Intelligence:

“When presented with (whatever means possible) Carl Barks’ whole production of Donald Duck comics, the AI can produce an (practically) infinite number of comics which, in no discernible way, differ in style or quality from any selected one of those by Carl Barks.”

The prize money goes to the first party to successfully present and demonstrate a KSAI. All conditions to attain the prize money are subject to change on a whim. I would also like to emphasize the “artificial” part of it. No shenanigans allowed. You know the drill.  Apply in the comments.

The Prize For the Development and Practical Demonstration of Kimmo Strong Artificial Intelligence

As usual, I am late for things. I would just like to announce that the prize money for developing and practically demonstrating a Kimmo Strong Artificial Intelligence has just been doubled!

Yes, you read it here first! The prize money is now a staggering, teeth-clenching *20* Euros! For those lazy or busy enough to click a link Kimmo Strong Artificial Intelligence is defined as:

“When presented with (whatever means possible) Carl Barks’ whole production of Donald Duck comics, the AI can produce an (practically) infinite number of comics which, in no discernible way, differ in style or quality from any selected one of those by Carl Barks.”

The prize money goes to the first party to succesfully present and demonstrate a KSAI. All conditions to attain the prize money are subject to change on a whim. No shenanigans allowed. Even unsuccessful entries are welcomed and perhaps laughed at. Apply in the comments.

The Prize For the Development of Kimmo Strong Artificial Intelligence

I am introducing a prize for the succesful development of a Kimmo Strong Artificial Intelligence. This prize will go to the individual or individuals or an organization, be it for-profit or not-for-profit, who produce an Artificial Intelligence that satisfy the requirements for an Kimmo Strong Artificial Intelligence:

“When presented with (whatever means possible) Carl Barks’ whole production of Donald Duck comics, the AI can produce an (practically) infinite number of comics which, in no discernible way, differ in style or quality from any selected one of those by Carl Barks.”

Choosing the recipient of the prize is left entirely at the discretion of me (Kimmo Savolainen). The prize money for winning is at the moment of posting 10€, subject to increase in the future.

Ideas For Future or Present Time Travellers Who Lack Imagination

It was exactly a year ago that I set my foot in Helsinki. This and the New Year (of which, I wish Happy for my readership) has prompted me to write some words of advice and inspiritation for any future or present time travellers.

Before anything else, a few words on building a time machine. First of all, your time machine will need to accommodate for travelling between parallel universes. If it doesn’t, your enjoyment and options are severely limited. If you have only one universe and you go back in time in it, you have changed it forever (from the moment you entered the past). You can’t go back in to the future and return to the set-up that you left. This is a consequence of the butterfly effect in practice and the further back in time you go, the more the moment you left from, will have changed if you are to return to it.

People make mistakes and this kind of situation is not a favourable one for a time traveller. What you want is the ability to change from parallel universes (of which there are practically an unlimited number of identical ones with this one) to another. This means that you can return to the point in time where you left and have it appear (in any conceivable way) identical to the one you left, regardless of what happened in the past.

Once you’ve built your time machine or modified your existing one to accommodate this feature, we are free to explore the fun stuff you can do with it! There are other things that might be beneficial for a time traveller, such as immortality or the ability to make a back-up of yourself, but I won’t go into them here.

1. Seduce a celebrity

Most celebrities are normal people before they became celebrities. With the knowledge you’ve learned about them during their public career, you can go back in time when they still weren’t famous and seduce them using that information!

2. Obtain unbeforeseen-works from your favourite artist.

Thanks to the butterfly effect, you can go back in time to a suitable moment and make any change in it, really, appearing there is enough of a change. Your favourite artist will live in a different universe than the one where you originated from and will produce works of art that differ from the ones you know. They might show similarities with the one’s you’re familiar with, but it’s practically impossible for them to be exactly the same than in your original universe. Subsequently, this is pretty much what KSAI offers as well.

3. Get rich

Pretty much the standard thing to do. Lottery won’t do it, thanks again to the butterfly effect but buying the right stock would almost definetely work. Locating lost treasures, works or art works as well.

4. Make sure that Babbage gots his act together.

Is going to have gotten? I don’t know, but Steampunky world is too romantic to ignore. Steam-powered mechanical computers? Come on!

5. Live the perfect day/week/month/year over and over again.

This is the Groundhog Day -method. It’s your payday, first vacation-day, your SO is running hot, the weather is beautiful, whatever the circumstances are that make a perfect day, you can rewind and have another go. There won’t be any surprises though, so my take would be to concentrate on satisfying basic needs. The longer the time you spend reliving the higher the possibility of something unexpected happening.

Of course there are plenty of other choices, but these are those that tickle my fancy the most. I didn’t get into the ethics of these situations or time travel in general since it probably makes a boring post, but you are free to engage in that discussion in the comments! If there are any time travellers reading this, it would be nice to get a ‘hi!’ from them. No posers!

A List of Artificial Intelligences in The Decreasing Order of Strength

The principal divide of Artificial Intelligences (AI) among researches in the field is between weak AI and strong AI. I have discussed this in connection with KSAI (Kimmo Strong Artificial Intelligence)  so I won’t go into that here but I will try and formulate a way to categorize AI’s (real, imaginary or theoretical) into something of an order.  I will take the idea of Rule following as my starting point.

The most simple way of rule following is to be able to repeat something. I will try to illustrate my idea using counting as an example, this example isn’t probably the best possible but we have to start from somewhere. If you are presented with how to count “2+2″ then on the lowest level thats all you can do. In the next level you can add any numbers together.  Further on, you can, starting from addition, come up with multiplication, on your own. Even further on, you can come up with different kind of numbers (such as fractions) and other basic concepts. Basically this level would mean you can create the whole system of Mathematics, i.e. you could come up with any number that can be counted. On the next level you could surpass this and be able of what I believe is called hyper-computation. Here we enter into the area of absolutely-theoretical it is pretty much impossible that we could never experience hyper-computation in this universe (or any parallel ones). It is of course possible to propose an infinite number of levels of intelligence by declaring each level surpassing the previous one, but those lose their relevance for a pragmatist pretty fast.

I hope this example illustrates that the problem of creating an AI is not one of having computational power but rather one of programming. I’m assuming that you really can’t come up with anything not provided by your “programming” and I use the term here in the loosest possible meaning. You humans, for example, can’t imagine what hyper-computing would be like, outside of listing some general attributes it should have.

But for now, on to the list! “Product” isn’t really defined here, but since we are so deep in theoretical swamps, we can assume it to mean whatever collection of human mind-states.

0. An AI capable of hyper-computing.

  • NOTES: This and possible higher levels are beyond human understanding.

1. An AI capable of producing anything within any possible universe.

  • NOTES: An AI at this level can produce anything any kind of intelligence can.

n. An AI capable of producing anything within this universe.

  • NOTES: An AI at this level can produce anything any intelligence can in our universe.

m. An AI capable of producing everything any possible human can.

p. An AI capable of producing everything any existing human can.

q. An AI capable of producing what one particular human can.

  • NOTES: The AI’s (and I’s) above this level are all capable of producing an AI more stronger than themselves, i.e. I’m claiming here that humans can produce a strong AI.

r. An AI capable of producing a meaningful subset of what one particular human can.

  • KSAI along with its various levels.

——–Line between strong and weak AI

s. an AI capable of altering computation (i.e. programming)

t. An AI capable of computation.  (Practically every computer program written to date belong here)

END NOTES:

  1. *sigh* There are probably many, many levels between r and s, but as I said we have to start somewhere.
  2. Consider this as a work-in-very-much-process, I’ll add more AI’s to the list in time.
  3. Is this making any sense to all you bots and botsesses?

Kimmo Strong Artificial Intelligence Revisited

I proposed the concept of Kimmo Strong Artifical Intelligence (KSAI) awhile back. In AI research some make a distinction between strong and weak AI. Strong AI can be seen having the same qualities as human intelligence. Weak AI in contrast isn’t capable of true reasoning and problem resolving. To a keen observer it is clear that within this vague framework there are levels of distinction with KSAI offering an example of.

KSAI is in short:

“When presented with (whatever means possible) Carl Barks’ whole production of Donald Duck comics, the AI can produce an (practically) infinite number of comics which, in no discernible way, differ in style or quality from any selected one of those by Carl Barks.”

Of course, even this definition carries different levels of strength.

Probably the weakest KSAI would be one that wouldn’t produce any original graphics of it’s own but would simply recycle those by CB. CB’s style varied and evolved during his career. A slightly stonger KSAI would be able to produce it’s own graphics, the style of which would probably be a mix of CB’s overall style (being able to emulate the “overall style” is of course what makes this AI a “strong” one) or produce the style CB had at the end of his career.

A stronger KSAI would be able to emulate CB’s style from any level of his career. Slightly stronger KSAI would be able to insert a character into a style that existed before it’s first apperiance.

Even further still one can imagine a stronger KSAI that would be able to produce comics with original (main or supporting) characters.

Yet stronger KSAI would be able to produce comics that wouldn’t in any way be Donald Duck comics but would be clearly in CB’s style.

Even within this quite limited application of Ai we can see clear distinctions. All of these levels assume the input of the KSAI would be identical and wouldn’t be limited just to the exact of content of CB’s comics.
